The "abode of clouds", Meghalaya is a rain-soaked north-eastern state in India which saw its first college as late as the year 1924 in Shillong - set up by a group of Irish Catholic Brothers. The literacy rate in the state has seen a marked improvement from 26.92% in 1961 to 75.48% in 2011. The presence of an IIM, a NIFT, North Eastern Hill University and many other famous colleges in Shillong, has made the capital city of Meghalaya, an education hub for the students of the north-east.
